Product Overview

The 125LB rising stem gate valve is a flanged carbon steel isolation valve from the ANSI/AWWA series, fitted with a bolted bonnet. It goes where a section of line has to be shut off completely and opened again — mains, headers, pump outlets and process pipework — rather than where flow has to be regulated. With the gate fully open it sits clear of the bore, so the valve adds very little resistance to the line it serves. Carbon steel gives the body more strength and impact resistance than a cast iron shell of the same class, which matters on a valve that will be lifted, bolted up and cycled for years. The flanged ends and the face-to-face length follow the ANSI class 125 dimensions, so an existing valve of that class comes out and this one goes in without adapters, reducers or a new spool piece. Operation is by handwheel, through a multi-turn stem. Nothing about the valve depends on a power supply, a control signal or a positioner, which is what makes it a practical choice for distribution networks and plant rooms where valves are worked by different crews on different shifts. As an ANSI gate valve supplier, we build this model for importers and distributors restocking an ANSI/AWWA line, for water utilities and contractors working to class 125 specifications, and for plant maintenance teams replacing a valve in kind.

Carbon Steel Body & Build

Body and bonnet of this carbon steel gate valve are cast and machined to work as a pair, then bolted together with a graphite gasket between the faces. The bolted joint is the part that earns its keep in service: unbolt the bonnet and the stem, packing and gate can be reached without cutting the pipe or lifting the valve out of the line. Packing and body gasket are the non-asbestos graphite grade listed in the specifications, which stands up to the working temperatures this class sees and avoids the handling restrictions that come with asbestos-based materials. The stem thread runs in the open above the bonnet rather than through the media, so it stays clean, stays lubricated and does not drag scale down into the packing — one of the practical advantages of a rising stem gate valve over a buried thread design. Flange faces are machined flat and drilled to the class 125 pattern, and the sealing surfaces inside the body are machined so the wedge seats evenly on both rings. The outside of the body carries a protective paint finish for storage and normal atmospheric service. If the valve is going into aggressive ground, a coastal atmosphere or a chemical plant, say so when you order and we will discuss the coating the body and flange bolts need.

Applications

  • Municipal water mains — section isolation at tees, valve chambers and repair points, where the visible stem lets a crew confirm valve position during a shutdown.
  • Water treatment and pumping stations — isolating pumps, filters and headers, with the full-bore open gate keeping head loss low on gravity-fed lines.
  • Industrial process pipework — chemical, HVAC and utility headers where a section has to be blanked off for maintenance, with carbon steel taking the plant temperatures this class allows.
  • Irrigation and waterworks schemes — distribution laterals and pump outlets, a common home for class 125 flanged valves on new schemes.
  • Retrofit and replacement — a direct swap for an existing ANSI face-to-face gate valve, without re-piping the spool around it.
  • Where a quarter-turn ball valve suits better — if a line is cycled many times a day, a ball valve is usually the more comfortable choice; this gate valve is for isolation that happens occasionally, with a firm wedge seat at each end of the stroke.

Rising Stem & Position Indication

  1. Turn the handwheel anticlockwise to open. The stem rises through the bonnet as the gate lifts, so the length of thread standing above the bonnet shows how far the valve has travelled.
  2. Take the rising stem gate valve to the fully open position rather than leaving it part-way: a gate hanging in the flow stream wears its seat edges and sets up turbulence on the line.
  3. Turn clockwise to close. The stem drops back to its starting height and the gate wedges against both seat rings.
  4. Note the closed stem height when the valve is first commissioned, so that any change is obvious at the next inspection round.
  5. Walk along a valve chamber or a plant header and the stem heights tell you which valves are open and which are shut, without touching a handwheel.
  6. Allow vertical room above the flanged gate valve at the layout stage. The stem needs travel space, and the handwheel has to stay reachable from the walkway or the chamber access point.
  7. Use hand pressure only. A bar or wrench on the handwheel rim over-torques the stem and stem nut and can damage the seating faces.

Installation & Commissioning

  1. Check the carbon steel gate valve before it goes near the line: the handwheel turns freely, the gate travels the full stroke, the flange faces are undamaged and the nameplate matches the line class.
  2. Clean the pipe run and the inside of the body before fitting. Mill scale, weld slag and grit are what damage a seat on the first closure.
  3. Fit the gasket that suits the media and temperature, then bring the flanges together without pulling the pipe into alignment — a flanged gate valve should never be used to close a gap in the line.
  4. Tighten the flange bolts in a cross pattern, in stages, until both faces are evenly loaded.
  5. Support the pipe on both sides of the valve so the body does not carry bending load from the line.
  6. Work the valve full open and full closed before the line is pressurised. It should travel without binding or a hard spot at either end.
  7. Pressure-test the installed line to your project standard and watch the bonnet joint and flange faces for weeps.
  8. Set the rising stem gate valve with the stem upright where the layout allows, and keep the handwheel clear of walkways, insulation and any future pipework.

Ordering & Delivery

  • What to send — size, quantity, flange drilling, the media the line carries, the working temperature, and the nameplate text if the valve is going out under your own brand. - Documents and testing — valves are pressure-tested before dispatch; if the project needs a material certificate, a test record or a witnessed test, ask at quotation stage so it is built into the schedule. Lead time and payment terms are confirmed by your sales contact with the quotation. - Packing — valves travel in wooden cases with the flange faces protected and the gate in the closed position; confirm case marking and any extra protection you want for sea freight. - Wider range — the same factory builds a DIN ball valve series, so a distributor can put gate valves and quarter-turn valves on one order and ship a single container. - Mixed standards — if the project also lists an ANSI ball valve item, send the line class and we will confirm what we can offer against it. - Other line items — where a tender calls for an API 608 ball valve on a neighbouring line, put it on the same inquiry instead of sourcing it separately. - Consolidation — buyers who have been splitting schedules across several ball valve manufacturers can move the whole list to one factory and keep inspection, packing and shipping on one timetable.

FAQ

What materials are used in the 125LB gate valve?

Body and bonnet are carbon steel, chosen for strength and a long service life, and the bonnet is bolted rather than welded. Packing and the body gasket use the material given in the specifications. Flange faces are machined flat and drilled to the class 125 pattern. If your specification names a carbon steel grade, or asks for a nameplate under your own brand, tell us when you order and we will match the documentation to it.

Can you customize the size or design of the 125LB gate valve?

The standard valve is built for the common class 125 sizes and pressure rating. Anything outside that — a different flange drilling, a non-standard face-to-face length, a nameplate or packing mark under your own brand — depends on the project, so send the requirement with your line details and we will confirm what is possible before you commit to the order.

How should the gate valve be maintained for long service?

Plan a periodic walk-round and keep the exposed stem thread lubricated; a dry, gritty stem is the usual reason a handwheel becomes stiff. Check the packing gland for weeping and take the nuts up evenly if it does. On lines that are rarely operated, work the valve through a full open-and-close a couple of times a year so the seat does not take a set, and re-check the bonnet bolts after the first few thermal cycles.

Can the valve be buried, or does it need a chamber?

It is normally set in a valve chamber or a pit where the handwheel and stem stay accessible. The standard paint finish is for atmospheric service, not direct burial. If the valve has to go into the ground or into aggressive soil, tell us when you order and we will discuss the protection the body and flange bolts need.

What does the 125LB class mean for my line?

125LB is the low-pressure ANSI class this series is built to, and the flanges are drilled to match class 125 pipe flanges, so the valve bolts straight onto other class 125 valves and fittings. It suits water, oil and gas duty within the temperature limit shown in the specifications. Where the line runs at a higher class, use a valve built to that class rather than adapting this one.

Do you build other valve types besides this gate valve?

Gate valves are one line on the floor. Globe, check, butterfly and ball valves are built alongside them, which is why many distributors use us as their ball valve supplier as well as their ANSI gate valve supplier. If a project mixes valve types and standards, put the whole list on one inquiry and we will confirm what can ship together.
